Dr. Ethan McEnroe is a first-generation American who grew up in Bakersfield, California.
Personal Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work, Dr. McEnroe enjoys spending time with his wife, his veterinary school sweetheart, their daughter, and their animals, including a chocolate Labrador, a Border Collie, three cats, and two horses. He and his family enjoy exploring the Central Coast together. His personal interests include horseback riding, backpacking, conformation dog shows, golfing, and working alongside his wife on their property in Atascadero.
Why I Chose This Profession
The son of a dairy veterinarian, he spent much of his childhood riding along on farm calls and gaining early exposure to the profession. He fondly recalls his father reading stories from All Creatures Great and Small at bedtime, an experience that helped shape his goal of becoming a veterinarian from a young age.
Education
Dr. McEnroe earned his bachelor's degree in Animal Science from California State University, Chico. He went on to receive his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis.
Professional Background
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. McEnroe has pursued a strong interest in organized veterinary medicine. He was also selected to participate in the prestigious Donald G. Low/CVMA Clinical Veterinary Medical Academy to further advance his knowledge and expertise in small animal emergency and critical care.
Memberships
He is actively involved with the California Veterinary Medical Association, where he serves as Chair of the Membership Committee and as an Early Career Veterinarian Governor-at-Large on the Board of Governors.
Work History
During his undergraduate years, he worked as a veterinary assistant, and after graduating, he spent time as a K to 12 substitute teacher.
Following veterinary school, Dr. McEnroe returned to the Chico area to practice in a mixed animal setting before relocating to the Central Coast. There, he worked at a 24/7 emergency hospital, first as an associate veterinarian and later as medical director. In 2023, he founded Petmed Urgent Care, driven by a commitment to accessible, high-quality veterinary care. In his continued effort to expand access to care for pets in the San Luis Obispo community, he later co-founded Cerro Alto Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital. Established in fall 2025, the hospital was created to provide 24/7 emergency services and bring specialty-level care to a region with limited access.
